Elderly and vulnerable residents in Ruddington are being urged to be vigilant after a spate of distraction burglaries in the area. Nottinghamshire Police officers are advising them not to answer the door to any unexpected callers and to report anything suspicious.
Rushcliffe Police are warning specifically of a rogue trader in Ruddington reported for demanding a large sum of cash for carrying out unnecessary remedial work. They highlight an elderly couple who were overcharged late yesterday morning (Friday 20th October) for basic roof maintenance that was not required. The offenders are described as two white men, between 20 and 25 years old. They were driving an old style red or maroon coloured Land Rover Discovery with a roof rack on top – with some sort of roof maintenance writing on the side of it.
Police advise you not to agree to any work being carried out on your property without getting at least three quotes from local tradesman.
Detective Inspector Pam Dowson, of the Nottinghamshire force, says: “Our message is simple – if you are not expecting someone coming to your home, don’t answer the door. Official callers will always make an appointment in advance.
Unfortunately these unscrupulous people tend to prey on the most vulnerable people and we would urge anyone with elderly or vulnerable relatives or neighbours to keep an eye on anyone calling at their house, where possible.
If anyone sees anything suspicious, please call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
